Day 5: Hunger for God’s Word
Day 5: Hunger for God’s Word
“But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” - Matthew 4:4 ESV
In our daily lives, food is essential for our physical well-being. We wouldn’t think of going days without eating, knowing that our bodies need nourishment to function properly. Yet, how often do we neglect our spiritual nourishment, which is equally vital for our souls? Jesus reminds us in Matthew 4:4 that we are not sustained by physical food alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. His Word is our spiritual sustenance, feeding and strengthening us from within.
Developing a hunger for God’s Word means recognizing its importance in our lives. It’s about desiring to dive deeper into Scripture, not just out of duty but out of a genuine longing to know God more intimately. As we consume His Word, it transforms us, renews our minds, and equips us to live according to His will.
However, in the busyness of life, it’s easy to push Bible reading to the side. We may say we don’t have time, or we may be tempted to think it’s not as necessary as other tasks. But just as our bodies grow weak without food, our spirits grow weak without the Word. If we want to grow in our faith, experience God’s guidance, and stand firm in the face of challenges, we must make His Word a priority.

Prayer Focus:
Today, ask God to stir within you a deep hunger for His Word. Pray that He would open your eyes to the treasures within Scripture and give you the discipline to make time for it daily. Ask for a heart that delights in His teachings and a mind that is eager to learn and grow through His truth.
Reflection:
Consider your current relationship with God’s Word. Is it a priority in your daily routine, or do you find yourself skipping over it? Reflect on practical ways you can integrate more of God’s Word into your life. Perhaps it’s setting aside time each morning to read a passage, or listening to Scripture during your commute. Whatever it may be, commit to making God’s Word a central part of your life, trusting that as you do, He will nourish your soul and deepen your walk with Him.
