Day 8: Breaking Strongholds

Day 8: Breaking Strongholds

“For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” - 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

In scripture the term “stronghold” referred to that place in the city that was the most secure. It was virtually impossible to break into it – thick-walled, impenetrable, the safehouse of the city. In this morning’s text, stronghold refers to the Evil One’s stronghold: that place in our life where we have allowed him to raise up — brick by brick — high, thick walls of “speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God.”

Strongholds are speculations like, “I don’t believe God can be trusted with my money, or my time or my job or my family.” Lofty ideas are delusions like “I will start spending time with the Lord…someday.”

“David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David… And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, WAS WITH HIM.” - 2 Samuel 5:10

It is not David’s military brilliance that got him to breakthrough. It was that God was with him. He experienced “the Lord of breaking through.”

Prayer Focus:

Pray for God to break any strongholds in your life. LORD, I set my heart to start the painful process of asking for your divine power to start breaking through the walls of distrust and control and fear in my life. I particularly ask that you help me fight … (you fill in the blank!)

Reflection:

Ask yourself, what is the first “brick” you are ready to pull down from the stronghold that could be holding you hostage.
