The Righteous Live by Faith

“Behold, his soul is puffed up; it is not upright within him, but the
righteous shall live by his faith.”
Habakkuk 2:4
During the reign of young King Jehoaikim, around 609 to 598 BC, Habakkuk, the prophet, was distraught at seeing failing leadership, the disobedience of his people, his community, “... the law paralyzed… justice goes forth perverted.”  Sounds familiar!  And seeing the rise of the Babylonians/Chaldeans, God tells Habukkuk to “…see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” (Habakkuk 1:4-5)  Even during tumultuous times God is working!

If we are not walking by faith - the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things unseen -  then by what power are we walking?  Are we hoping in the temporal things of the world?  Are we "puffed up", bolstered by trust in our own abilities?  Leaning on our own understanding?

If we have committed our lives to serving the One True King, Jesus Christ, and we happen to fall back into self-reliance, we are deluding ourselves.  We forgot the light that illumens, the Truth that sets us free.  The good news is He is there waiting for us to turn around and run back to the source of original power, the Living Word of the Father.
Prayer: Father, You are Holy and as my Maker, know me better than I know myself.  All things created were made through and to Your Son, Jesus.   Please give me a divine dose of repentance to turn from the subtle deception of self-reliance. Grow in me a reverent urgency to see my own posturing as the sin that drains my energy, authenticity, and connection to you.  Would you give me the faith to love You more, to abide in Your Word, to love my family, friends, and neighbors correctly, without the defensiveness that comes with pretending to have it all figured out.  I love You, Lord.  Thank You for holding onto me.
