Renewed Strength in Waiting

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31
The Lord loves those who wait for Him. We see this idea woven into Scripture throughout the Bible. So, how does one wait for the Lord? Does this insinuate an attitude of passivity? Laziness? Shirking of duties because we are waiting to hear from the Lord?

As we read Isaiah 40:31, we see that each action stands in great juxtaposition to the fruit or result of each: waiting and finding renewed strength; running and not becoming weary; walking and not growing faint. This intentional pairing displays our human frailty with God’s incomparable power and might. It causes one to examine the condition of man in light of God’s nature, inexhaustible, a well that never runs dry.

The entirety of Isaiah 40 builds up to our verse with reminders to God’s people that He is the giver of all good things, Lord of lords, helper of the weary, and sustainer of the humble. What a comforting promise of hope as we patiently endure!

This verse on waiting is an invitation to accept the certainty of God’s sovereignty and dominion over every facet of the human experience, and to seek the Lord’s will at every opportunity through prayer. Expect that the Lord’s will shall be accomplished, and in that truth, our strength shall be renewed.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You that You are Lord of all, my helper, and my sustainer. I acknowledge that You are inexhaustible and Your authority is beyond my understanding.
I confess that at times I am quick to act in and rely on my own strength and knowledge in seasons of waiting or weakness. How often am I quick to call out to You but not posture myself to rely on You? Father, draw me to Yourself! Stir in my heart a hunger and desire for You, Your Word, and Your fellowship. Give me the faith to seek Your will. In Your loving kindness, help me find enduring peace and a renewed energy and hope in the knowledge of who You are, lacking in nothing!
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
