Trust in God's Name

"Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God."
Psalm 20:7
Psalm 20:7
In Psalm 20, King David makes a bold declaration of confidence: “We trust in the name of the LORD.” The “name of the LORD” refers to Yahweh, God’s covenant name, representing His character, promises, power, and faithfulness to His people. David contrasts this trust with chariots and horses, the most advanced military resources of his time. Chariots were symbols of strength, speed, and human security in warfare. To trust in them meant relying on visible power and human strategy.
But David chooses differently. He places his confidence not in what can be seen, but in who God is. Trust is faith in action. It’s not just believing God can help, it’s choosing to rely on Him when other options feel safer. True trust shifts our dependence from temporary strength to an eternal God who never fails.
The world around us is constantly shifting, systems fail, plans change, and what once felt secure can disappear overnight. Yet in the middle of all this uncertainty, Scripture reminds us that the Maker of heaven and earth remains steady, faithful, and fully at work. God is always revealing mighty things about Himself, often in seasons when nothing seems to be changing on the surface. Consider with the Lord where you are tempted to trust in “chariots and horses” and how might the Holy Spirit be inviting you to trust His name instead?

Prayer: Lord, you are Yahweh, faithful and unchanging. Forgive me for the times I place my trust in what feels strong, visible, or familiar instead of fully relying on you. Help me recognize the “chariots and horses” in my life and willingly lay them down before you. Teach me to trust your name, your character, and your promises, even when circumstances feel uncertain or unchanged. Enlighten the eyes of my heart to see the good things you are doing, and strengthen my faith to act on that trust daily.
