Trust Without Leaning on Understanding

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5
Proverbs 3:5
Many of us struggle when we cannot understand something. Maybe you feel discouraged, or even like giving up. It is an uncomfortable feeling, because when we do not understand, we face the unknown.
The thing is, we may not understand everything, but our hope is placed in the God who does. He knows the unknown, and He wants to lead us through it. Something to notice here: God leads. We don’t get the roadmap, no matter how much we want that control.
The author of this Proverb reminds us how important it is to depend on the Lord, and not ourselves. He does this using a heart as a visual. What does it mean to trust God with all of your heart? In this context, the heart means the central or innermost part of yourself. Think about your innermost desires, dreams, anxieties, and joys. Are you trusting God with all of these, or are you leaning on your own understanding and trying to get the job done yourself?
Chances are, we all have something we are trying to hold on to. Allow this Proverb to remind you to truly trust God with all of your life, not just the areas that feel too big to lift by yourself. This is where we experience God: when we willingly let Him lead our lives in His wisdom and power. Lean into God, and He will guide you on His righteous path, every step of the way.

Prayer: God, I pray that you would allow me to release the need to understand everything. Help me when I stand in fear of the unknown, and remind me that you know what is best. Don’t allow me to seek my own way, but let me grow in my dependence on you, Lord. Allow me to release the things to you that I am holding back, and trust that they will flourish more in Your hands than they ever could in mine. God, you are my Lord, my rock, and my redeemer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
