Faith in God's Power

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.”
Ephesians 3:20
As a child who grew up in an age of regular TV commercials, I had access to every Hot Wheels, Super Soaker, and Barbie advertisement. I may not have seen these items in person, but I knew they existed—and that owning any one of them could be a possibility. Beyond what I witnessed on TV, my understanding of the most desirable and extravagant toy was limited by what my friends or neighbors had, or what I may have seen in a magazine. My knowledge was my ceiling.

In Ephesians 3:20, Paul is giving glory to God—the one “who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” God is able. Do you come with a posture of expectancy and hope when you approach the throne of God? Or do you find your prayers stunted by your doubts or by uncertainty about what you believe is possible?

What if I don’t know how to ask for what I’m asking God for? What if he won’t? What if that is too lofty? Who am I to ask that of God? God is abundantly able.

Don’t give credence to your limited knowledge or abilities! Paul is calling us to step outside of what we believe is possible and to deepen our faith in a God who will “do far more abundantly than all we ask or think.” Come boldly to his feet and pray prayers that acknowledge the divine nature and immeasurable greatness of the God we serve. How our faith might rise! How our prayer life might come alive! Do you believe that he is able?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that you are both knowable and yet unknowable. Thank you that your ways and thoughts are so much higher than mine! What a comfort that while you are the all-knowing Creator, your love for me is great. I recognize that I am prone to pray small prayers, lacking in expectancy and a posture acknowledging that you are not just able, but abundantly so. Lord, break down the walls in my heart and mind that box me into the belief that my hope is found in what my mind is able to conjure. Fill me with greater trust in you. Give me the margin in my day to seek you and find you. Make yourself known to me, and let the truth of your word and your nature rewrite and recalibrate the way that I come to you in prayer—believing you for more than I can imagine!
