Faith + Deeds

"So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."
James 2:17
If salvation is a free gift we cannot earn or lose, does what we do in this life even matter?

This question has challenged followers of Jesus for centuries, and for good reason. Getting it wrong doesn’t just confuse our theology; it sets a trajectory for our lives that leads us either closer to Jesus or quietly, and tragically, away from Him.

James makes this conversation uncomfortably personal. He says if our life shows no visible evidence of the Holy Spirit’s sanctifying work, then this is not merely a weak or immature faith. James says it's a dead one. And yet, this bluntness is not meant to crush us, but to wake us. Because the God who exposes dead faith is the same God who delights to give living faith to all who come to Him.

Living faith bears fruit. Our thoughts, desires, and actions become transformed as an act of worship, not to earn God’s love, but as a response to the love He first poured out for us on the Cross.

If you were to do a personal faith inventory, would you find a faith that lives, or is it all pretense? Does your life show love for God and neighbor, or is your faith dead, as evidenced by the absence of works? James calls us to look honestly at our hearts, and to respond to the grace of God that is actively pursuing us even now, ready to make our faith alive.
Prayer: Father, I recognize that I have nothing to boast in but you. You alone are the author and perfector of faith. I pray you would awaken in me a faith that gives birth to worship, that would strengthen me to love even my enemy, and cause me to lean solely on You for all things. Give me vision for all the ways You desire to use my life for the purposes of Your Kingdom. May I live a life that bears the unmistakable fruit of your presence within me. Amen.
