Peace Guarding Your Heart

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7
Philippians 4:6-7
It’s often easy to rely on our own abilities and our own understanding. We like to be in control and solve our own problems. Then we wonder why we are so anxious, worried or stressed. Late nights anxious about work. Worry for your family and their wellbeing. What if we were never meant to carry these things on our own?
Paul tells us to not be anxious about anything, but in everything let our requests be made known to God. The things we worry about are not too big or too small for God. He is able and wants to bear our burdens for us. Prayer is about surrendering control to God, giving Him our fears and anxieties, relying on His strength.
When we do that, when we give it all to God, we are filled with peace from Him that can bring a stillness in the midst of the storm. God doesn’t promise a change in circumstance but he does promise a peace that surpasses our understanding in those circumstances. This turns our desire for control to a desire of worship and praise to the God who brings us peace.

Prayer: Father, you are the God of peace. I know that I can come to you with my worries and anxieties and lay them at your feet. Help me to give up control over things that don’t bring me life and surrender them to you because you are good and I know that when I surrender to you, a peace that surpasses understanding will guard my heart and mind even in the middle of difficult situations.
